Activity 5: Exploring Emotional or Expressive Characteristics of Shapes
Purpose:
Like line, shape can suggest emotional or expressive qualities (see Picasso’s Guernica, 4.16 in your textbook).
Materials:
Drawing materials: pencil, ink, crayon, and paper.
Method:
A) Work with free shapes, geometric shapes, or combinations of shape families to create abstract expressions for such titles as Tempest, Rowers, Strikers, Ballet Dancers, Circus Clowns, and others that you think of.
B) Try the same thing using invented words, such as Balooma, Irskt, Sleema, Rz-z-z-z-z, Sloovonious.
C) Try to express your reactions to certain situations, such as loneliness, mystery, excitement, triumph, despair, conflict, and other emotions.
